Biographie de Robert De Niro

Né le 17 août 1943 à New York, dans le quartier de Little Italy, Robert De Niro grandit entouré d'artistes, fils de deux peintres. À seize ans, il abandonne l'école pour se consacrer pleinement au théâtre, passant par le Stella Adler Conservatory puis l'Actors Studio, où se forgent les bases d'un jeu d'une intensité rare.

Ses débuts au cinéma restent discrets, à travers quelques films de Brian De Palma à la fin des années 1960. C'est la rencontre avec Martin Scorsese qui change tout : Mean Streets, en 1973, le révèle au grand public. Dès l'année suivante, il remporte l'Oscar du meilleur second rôle pour son incarnation du jeune Vito Corleone dans Le Parrain, 2e partie. Suivront Taxi Driver, Voyage au bout de l'enfer, et Raging Bull, qui lui vaut un deuxième Oscar, cette fois dans la catégorie meilleur acteur, en 1981.

Sa filmographie traverse les genres, des polars aux comédies, des fresques historiques aux thrillers. En 1993, il passe à la réalisation avec Il était une fois le Bronx. En 2019, The Irishman marque ses retrouvailles avec Scorsese.

Récipiendaire de la Médaille présidentielle de la Liberté en 2016, il reçoit la Palme d'honneur du Festival de Cannes en 2025.
